What's up with Alishan?

So What's up with Alishan?

We got a surprise visit by long time cruising friends Uli and Molly.
First time we met Uli was when we both were sailing around in the South Pacific.
Talking 1986 now ;-)

First thing we did here in Fukuoka...Hit the Sushi-wheel!

Then, a new boat arrived at Odo Yachtharbor,
the marina around the corner from us.

with on board owner Dave and crew Mathew.
Both flew out more or less the next day, leaving
RESOLUTION to stay here for a few months and to keep me busy.

What else?

So often people wonder how we can live on such a small boat like ALISHAN
Well, this is how we do it....

 Boat Sweet Home.

Of course, with Master Mariner Nori.
He is in charge and stays in charge of things on board.
(even right now, i have to struggle to keep him off the keyboard...)

Still proud of having cruised SE Asia,
including the 2 months trip up the Kinabatanga River, Borneo.
Great elephant spotter, he is.

The boy is 15 years old now...
and showing off his missing right upper fang.

Oops...what was that...?

Nope, just a seagull.
All is well.
Time for an other snooze.
Always time for a snooze these days.

Leisure Hiking in Kyushu

We all wanted to go for a Hike.
None of us was keen on too much strain.
So, somehow we ended up hiking this area
 in the middle Kyushu.
Not sure if it was in Oita or Kumamoto Prefecture.
But what a joyful & leisure hike it became.
See here some pictures.

Looks easy enough, don't you agree?

Arriving at the top....and the view.... so often, a bit Japanese hazy, but still spectacular.

Always something to read.
Shoot with Google Translate, and you "know" it all.

If needed, there is a hiking stick for you.....
As found at so many trail-heads.
Great service.

It was an other crowded day at this Kyushu Hiking trail.

 even spotted some wildlife.

Sign shows you the way and what to see at different the seasons.

This too is a great destination for your
Camper Rental Trip.

Making plenty of Sea-miles.

Even after my job on the Nordhavn 60 has finished,
i still make plenty of sea-miles.

Well, one J.O.B. requires me, twice a month, to take the ferry from Fukuoka to Oronoshima.
A small island half-way between Hakata and Iki Island.
About 25 miles, port to port.
The ferry leaves right from the terminal conveniently next to our harbor.
A mere 15 second !! walk from Alishan.
The ferry ride it self, is just 1 hour.

The ferry arrives at the one and only harbor at Oro Island.

And the main activity for the island people is...tatataaa

Not many people live on the island.
Showing you here: Main Street.

And this is Main Road, leaving town....

Being such an isolated island,
the people have to be totally self supporting regarding vegetables etc.
Onions are a sure produce.

One of the 2 intersections.
Right will take you to the center of the island,
left will take you to......

......the Elementary and Junior High School.
Where i'm happily involved with the English ALT section.

The Elementary School has 10 and
JH has 3 students.
A homey & happy place indeed.

On the right, the ferry dock.
Only on  Sat, Sun, Tue and Thursdays (my day)
there is a return service from Fukuoka < > Oronoshima.
What allows me a stay of 3 hours
Just enough for the lesson and a lunch together with the kids...
But it's usually a run back from the school to the harbor.

On my route to the port i take a short-cut
via the Other Street in town.....
No need for Google Maps  ;-).

Up next, some pictures of my other J.O.B. Life.

It starts well before 5 AM.
Being youngest (!!) crew-member on board of Sumie Maru.
One of the fishing vessels of our harbor.

Depending on the weather, the sea conditions and the catch, we might be at sea till around 3 PM.

Then the following morning.....

.....3 AM !!

We have to bring the catch from the previous day to the fish-market in town.

At the market, fish is ready to be auctioned.

Now it's our turn....

And all is sold in under 1 minute.

In the hall next door,
tuna is being prepared for the customers.
What a skill!!

For a Youtuby i made about the fishing, please see:

Best time of the Year

Yes, to me:
is the Best time of the Year.
(please ignore the date of publishing this posting ;-)

Days are getting longer & warmer.
All around us flowers, blossom and fresh green are making me happy.

And of course, it's great weather for Hikes and Bikes
in and around Fukuoka and beyond.

The following are some pictures taken during a local hike,
only a 30 minutes bicycle ride from Alishan.

At the top of Kanondake, Imajuku.

Next, some pictures taken during a Fun Run
into the country side @ Itoshima.

Always happy to see Fuji in Bloom.

An other pleasing thing to see.....

Rice planting!
 May is in full swing.

Always good to have friends of friends.
This is Mr Shinkai san.
His hobby is making soba.
One day, we = the friends, ran all the way (25K)
to be fed @ his house in Itoshima  .
Did you hear any complains?

And While On the Run
at our local small forest, we found these 'wild strawberries".
For a week, we came home every day with a nice portion to be mixed with our yogurt.
